Banff's Most Rewarding Beautiful Leisure Drive For Explorers
Paralleling the Trans-Canada Highway just beyond Banff is the Bow Valley Parkway which is the old highway that was finished from Banff to Lake Louise in 1920. This old highway is a scenic drive in the Canadian Rockies. If you're visiting the Canadian Rockies, it is a "must" drive for the traveler.
After 1950, when the Trans-Canada Highway was finished, this old highway became a secondary highway and was known as the 1A until 1986 when a renovation turned the road into the Bow Valley Parkway. Because the Bow Valley rises and winds, it gives travelers a superior view of the stunning peaks of the mountains and beautiful green valley.
The Canadian Rockies has a number of classic drives and this is one of the must-drive roads. It's an easy to find parkway with pull-outs, less traffic, and is terrific for wildlife observing. Nearly all of Banff National Park's big game wildlife has been present at, one point or another, from the parking lots and from driving along this road.
There are interpretive exhibits, picnic areas, trails, waterfalls, campgrounds, meadows, places to stay, cabins, a heritage site, and, not to mention the obvious, but also the impressive river, along the parkway. For those who like to trek, there are multiple trails that lead to awesome natural sites, such as waterfalls and lakes. Campers will find several wilderness-surrounded campgrounds and those looking for more comforts will be pleased to hear that there are cabins and chalets at several points along the parkway.
The Bow Valley Parkway is a gorgeous drive even if tourists only drive and stop at a few exhibits. The vistas are spectacular. If visitors drive early or late in the day, especially in the late spring/early summer or in the early fall, the probability of seeing wildlife are excellent. Deer are commonly seen eating by the side of the road. Don't get frustrated when approaching a traffic slow down, this is an indication that there is big game ahead.
There are more than 30 points of interest on this road including one of Banff's most famous hiking trails, Johnston Canyon, so be sure to allow at least half a day to drive this parkway. A hike will put on an extra three or four hours to the itinerary.
